Die Fotoserie congestions untersucht die Auswüchse des urbanen motorisierten Individualverkehrs und seinen Effekt auf Stadtentwicklung. Befragt wird nicht nur der Status Quo selbst, sondern auch die Art unserer Wahrnehmung, die sich über Jahrzehnte der Ideologie einer autogerechten Stadt angepasst hat – einem Denkmodell, das von der Realität längst widerlegt ist und dennoch weiter perpetuiert wird.

Jedes der Bilder zeigt eine innerstädtische Kreuzungssituation, in der die Masse der Fahrzeuge durch Überblendung mehrerer Einzelaufnahmen aus identischer Kameraperspektive künstlich verdichtet wurde. Auch wurden alle Passanten entfernt.

Das daraus resultierende „gefälschte“ Bild entpuppt sich jedoch als wahrhaftigere und präzisere Wiedergabe urbanen Verkehrs, als ein simpler Schnappschuss jemals sein könnte – ein Kondensat dessen, was in unserem automotiven Lebensstil im Argen liegt.

The series congestions examines the hyperplasia of city traffic and its effect on urban development. It aims to question not only the status quo itself, but also the way our perception has fatally adapted to the aberrations of decades, turning a blind eye on transportation planning that still relies heavily on last-century concepts of automotive cities long since proven defective.

In each of the images, an inner-city crossroads situation is displayed, the mass of vehicles artificially condensed by blending multiple subsequent shots from an identical camera position.

The resulting „fake“ picture, however, turns out to be a more truthful and accurate rendition of modern urban traffic than a simple snapshot could ever be - an essence of what is inherently wrong with our automotive lifestyle.

Zusätzlich fungiert ein Seitenprojekt als Gegenstück und introvertierter Zwilling des „congestions"-Projektes. Es bildet die selben Locations ab, diesmal jedoch sind alle Fahrzeuge entfernt. Der eigentliche Charakter der Orte wird freigelegt – es sind Flecken urbanen Brachlandes.

Statt Brennpunkte des Quartierslebens sind diese Plätze zu asphaltierten No-Go-Bereichen im Herzen der Stadt geworden. Den Anwohnern wird jede Aneignung verwehrt, ihnen bleibt nur, sich vorsichtig entlang der Fußgängerüberwege um den Platz herum zu bewegen, im Takt der Ampelschaltungen.

Additionally, a side-project features as the counterpart and introverted twin of the „congestions“ project, mirroring the same locations. However, this time around, all vehicles have been removed, exposing the places for what they are – patches of urban wasteland.

These squares, rather than providing focal points to surrounding neighbourhood life, have turned into tarmacked no-go-areas in the heart of the city. Instead of inhabiting the space, denizens are kept out, confined to cautiously circling their own premises along marked pedestrian crossings on the cue of the traffic lights.
